An Aussie meat pie is a popular street food sold at almost every corner in Australia. We were thrilled to be invited to the Aussie Pie Kitchen (APK) in Santa Monica, which is their original store location. Their second location is in Inglewood, and a third store just opened its doors in Hollywood.
APK pies are inspired by the Aussie meat pie. However, owner Nick Bishop emphasized that their pies are not authentic Aussie meat pies, as they have “completely reinvented, recreated, and rebuilt the pie from the crust down.” APK pie recipes were designed by the Food Network “Chopped” champion, Joe Youkhan. Unlike the authentic Aussie meat pie, APK pies are cooked over a period of 3 days, are served with hot and/or cold sides and are meant to be eaten with a fork, instead of your hands. Their selection of sides includes: minty mushy peas, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, edamame & sweetcorn succotash and creamy thyme gravy. Their pies are great for any meal of the day, whether breakfast, lunch or dinner.
The photo below shows the Ground Beef Pie topped with minty mushy peas on a bed of roasted garlic mashed potatoes:

They also operate The Pie Cycle, which delivers their food from Monday to Friday. The Pie Cycle is currently only available to the lucky folks on Main Street in Santa Monica, but they are looking to expand the service in the future.
